These have been on my mind and on my sewing machine.
The block size (1 wheel) is 12 inches, which helps make that curve a bit easier to sew than on a smaller block. They are still more time consuming than I am used to with my "want it now" type of quilt making. :) But I like these, and will make more...
There is a pattern called "Steam Punk Pattern" by Jen Kingwell Designs, the square comes out about 9.25" I believe and the outer ring is thinner. There have been a lot of awesome Steampunk blocks on Instagram. It is a really cool modern design. I have not done the research to see similar designs in older quilts, but I can't think of any. I have seen this with straight lines and no circles in the center.
Quilting has changed. I have never bought a quilt pattern, nor have I ever sold a quilt pattern. My day job is a Designer / drafter. I know how to use AutoCAD, and can draw up a design very quickly. My point... is that quilting has changed in that now so many people are selling patterns (and that is great with the big surge of new quilters), but that makes me question copyrights. I think it is acceptable to still draw up ones own pattern to use.
At any rate. Love this design, and would love it in a smaller block if I had the patience. :)
I love what you have done with that block! You know lots of those type of blocks are coming out of Australian quilters these days. They are into lots of acrylic templates and I find it really interesting how they combine their fabrics too; vintage with modern and it really works and looks absolutely gorgeous and authentic! It may be true though that there is nothing truly new under the sun just reimagined!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Lovin the big surge in quilting around the world.
